Pay cut

Sat Aug 08 2026

A couple months ago, I was tasked with more responsibilities at work. It wasn't really a promotion or anything, they just gave me more things to handle because the department was overwhelmed. And with the increased workload, it also came with a pay bump of roughtly USD$300 to my monthly salary.

I just got news yesterday that they were cutting some of the extra work they gave me (funnily enough, they took away the least annoying one of the four) and also cutting the pay bump in half. I'm going to try standing up against this next Friday when I see them. Because they give me three extra things to do (I was already doing one extra thing for 'free') and then cut one of the tasks and slash the pay bump in half? The math isn't working out.

I was told that my original salary increase last year (before this paybump) was because I was already helping the department out with extra things (the one extra thing I was doing for 'free'). I was shocked because I was never told this. The pay bump came when I told the company I was leaving because I was being paid less than a high school graduate. To them they gave me a raise because I was doing extra, to me I was getting a raise because I didn't want to work here unless if I was paid better.

Like seriously, this is a dead end job. I was only there because it was supposed to be chill and so I could make money while studying in part time university. But that's not true, I even get calls about settling work when I'm on holiday because I'm the only person in my position doing my work. I was given a lot of responsibility and it's not as flexible as initially promised.

Ah, what a pain. I'll start putting together my resume and preparing to leave after I get my bonus at the end of this year. I'm still not completely ready to tackle leetcode interviews, I need to prepare.
